WOMEN'S REVIEW – AUGUST 20, 2016 RIO 2016 2012 Rio 2016 was the first time the Olympic triathlon event had started with a beach sprint into the water, and it was Australia's Emma Moffatt who hit the lead early on in the choppy surf, but there was under ten seconds between the first 20 athletes out of the water. The first bike lap saw Non Stanford go out hard in an attempt to split the field, quickly joined by teammate Vicky Holland, Nicola Spirig and Flora Duffy at the front. Taking turns they hammered out the pace, but Gwen Jorgensen was able to hold on to the lead group despite Spirig's best efforts to pull clear at various stages of the 8-lap bike segment. The lead group wasn't long out of second transition before Jorgensen and Spirig hit the front of the 10km run, and their battle continued for a gripping half hour of tactical cat-and- mouse. With nearly 30 seconds their gap to bronze chasers Stanford, Holland and Barbara Riveros at the 5km mark, it was with 2km to go that Jorgensen finally looked to have kicked clear of her Swiss rival, Spirig hanging tough for silver, Holland edging the bronze. It was a trademark display of control and running prowess from the American, and another superb Olympic podium for Spirig, Holland's bronze the first Olympic medal for a female GB triathete.
