MEN'S REVIEW – AUGUST 7, 2012 LONDON 2012 Heading into an Olympic triathlon race at home in Britain, Alistair Brownlee and Jonathan Brownlee had finished first and second in the previous year's ITU World Triathlon Series. Spain's Javier Gomez was thought to be the only person that might be able to break their dominance. Gomez and both Brownlees were in the lead pack out of the swim. While the majority of the men entered T2 together, the British brothers and Gomez immediately poured on a pace that put more than 50 metres between themselves and the rest of the competition on the run. Drama unfolded as the younger Brownlee brother was forced to serve a 15-second penalty for a transition infraction at the start of the final lap, pushing him further back. But up ahead it was Alistair who was sending the hundreds of thousands by the Serpentine into a frenzy. Brownlee slowed to pick up a British flag and jogged across the finish line to claim gold. Gomez ran across next, avenging the podium he missed in Beijing to garner silver, giving Spain its first triathlon medal. Despite the penalty, Jonathan Brownlee was still well clear of the field and ran across to collect bronze.
