There was end-of-season drama at the women's Vina del Mar World Cup as four athletes were disqualified for cutting the course, including the first across the finish line, Katie Zaferes. That meant gold for Gwen Jorgensen, who had hauled her way into contention after strong swims from Zaferes and Djenyfer Arnold saw them onto the bike segment first. Mathilde Gaultier, Teresa Zimovjanova and Anna Godoy Contreras were also pushing really hard up front, keeping the gap around 20 seconds to chasers Jorgensen, Gina Sereno and Vicky Holland. Godoy set the early run pace before Zaferes and Zimovjanova joined, but at the end of lap one the group took the wrong route through transition, a mistake that would cost them dearly. So as she took the tape and what appeared to be the win, Zaferes could only look on as an appeal saw Jorgensen emerge with the gold, Sereno the silver and Holland the bronze. 12 Nov 2023 Elite Women 106 contents
