A powerful sprint finish crowned Brazil's Miguel Hidalgo as the men's 2023 Pan American champion, after a tactical battle that saw the young Brazilian cross the line just inches ahead of USA's Matthew McElroy and Mexico's Crisanto Grajales. The day didn't start well for Hidalgo as he stumbled on the beach-start before recovering to chase down Diego Moya (CHI), Chase MacQueen (USA) and Seth Rider (USA) at the front of the swim. That trio pulled clear out of T2 on the 40km bike, as Matt McElroy, and Hidalgo quickly organised the pack that needed only one lap to get to them. After a couple of fruitless attacks, Chase McQueen took his turn to roll the dice with a lap to go, carving out a mighty 40 seconds by the time he hit T2. That still wasn't enough, though, as Rider, Martin Sobey (CAN), Tyler Smith (BER) and Gaspar Riveros (CHI), a big group running together for 5km. With one lap to go, Hidalgo, Grajales and McElroy made their move and stuck together right to the blu carpet when, with less than 300m to go, Hidalgo went full gas to take the tap just inches ahead of McElroy and Grajales. 2 Nov 2023 Panamerican Games - Elite Men 204 contents
