The women's New Plymouth World Cup featured a competitive field of 54 athletes lining up on a gloomy morning on the New Zealand coast. It was Emma Jeffcoat of Australia, Nicole van der Kaay, and Ainsley Thorpe from New Zealand leading the swim segment and out onto the bike course where a dynamic front group including Erika Ackerlund, Sophie Linn and Jeffcoat showcased their cycling prowess and were able to keep away from the likes of Rio 2016 Olympic champion Gwen Jorgensen and Claire Michel chasing hard 40 seconds back. Bikes racked, it was Van der Kaay who then dominated the 5km run from the outset, securing her first World Cup gold on a wave of home crowd support. Teammate Thorpe claimed a first World Cup silver, and Norway's Solveig Lovseth earned a first bronze, while Jorgensen finished 14th in her comeback race. 26 Mar 2023 Elite Women 54 contents
