stanFord shines throuGh
on history-maKinG day
Just 13 points separated Gwen Jorgensen, Non Stan-
ford and Anne Haug in the race for the 2013 ITU World
Championship title, but it was Stanford who carved out
her own slice of history in one of the most dramatic
Grand Final races yet.
It started when Haug exited the swim two minutes
behind the leaders, before an unlucky Jorgensen
crashed out early on the bike. A two-way battle between
Stanford and Jodie Stimpson then loomed, but Stanford
also had to contend with a 15-second penalty for incor-
rectly placing her wetsuit in T1.
With that on her mind, Stanford strode to the front on
the run with the gutsy aim to create a race-winning lead
before serving the time. The 24-year-old did just that,
in the process becoming the first woman to go straight
from winning an Under23 title to a senior one.
In a frenetic finishing chute, Ireland's Aileen Morrison
unleashed a brilliant sprint to claim the silver medal and
Australia's Emma Moffatt held on for bronze. Stimpson's
fourth place meant she moved into the overall silver
medal spot in 2013, while a gutsy Haug finished 35th,
enough to ensure she collected overall series bronze.
