Switzerland's Nicola Spirig had been a busy woman
since claiming Olympic gold in London in that epic
photo-finish sprint, marrying long-time sweetheart
and fellow triathlete Reto Hug and then giving birth
to the couple's first child, son Yannis. But it looked
like she hadn't skipped a beat on her return to ITU
racing in Cozumel. Spirig drove the chase to the
leaders by the second lap of the bike and then made
her beak with 2.5km to go on the run. It was a com-
manding win, ahead of the USA's Sarah Groff and
Austria's Lisa Perterer. In the men's race Javier
Gomez finished his season exactly the way he star-
ted it. Punctuating his season with wins in Mooloo-
laba and then Cozumel meant he now finished 2013
with a career total of 14 WC wins, three behind all-
time leader Brad Beven. In soaring temperatures
and humidity, Gomez was comfortably in control
throughout the course and took charge in the
finishing chute to hold off France's Aurelien Lescure
and Russia's Dmitry Polyanskiy.
