Due to an ankle injury that had kept him out of racing since the 2012 WTS Grand Final Auckland, Brownlee had initially thought his season was over before it started and was low in confidence. It turns out, just like his brother's return to racing in San Diego, that he needn't have been concerned. After finding his regular place in the lead of the swim Brownlee worked with a small but powerful group of eight on the technical bike course, including Javier Gomez and Mario Mola, to put a gap of 90 seconds into the rest of the chasers from the run. For a while it seemed another epic battle between Brownlee and Gomez was on the cards, before Jonathan left the Spainard in his wake on lap two of four and went on to beat Gomez by 24 seconds. Portugal's Joao Silva held on for his third consecu- tive bronze medal of the year, enough to stay ahead in the overall World Triathlon Series rankings.
