Jonathan BroWnLee Gets one up
on Brother aListair
It was the first time since the 2012 London Olympic
Games that the three men's medallists had stood
on a start-line together and yet another epic battle
between Alistair Brownlee, Jonathan Brownlee and
Javier Gomez unfolded. But Hamburg 2013 ended-
up being one of the most intriguing races between
the three, as one few times that Jonathan has
beaten his brother to the line.
The trio were all in contention until the dying stages
of the 5km run, when Alistair Brownlee upped the
tempo. While the younger Brownlee stayed in
Alistair's slipstream for the next minute, Jonathan
produced the killer kick, taking the lead just as the
pair stepped onto the blue carpet of the finishing
chute and not giving it up.
"I thought it was going to be Alistair's day – I thought
I'd never beat him. He's gone into this pretty unprepa-
red but I knew I had to give everything," Jonathan said.
While Gomez's third place meant he held onto the
overall series rankings, the Brownlee's podium spots
meant they were both positioning themselves well for
a title shot at the business end of the season.
