VENUE & COMPETITION // 29 SWIM All swim courses will take place in the beautifully refurbished lake in Hawrelak Park. The athletes will dive from the shore of the lake and swim 750m around the island. The expected water temperature is between 17-19 degrees Celsius. The swim exit will be a sand slope within the elevation limits set out by the ITU. The swim course is spectator and television friendly as it is never more than 25 meters from the shoreline. There is a patio for viewing that allows spectators and media to be very close to the athletes. BIKE All bike courses will be closed to vehicular traffic. Athletes will head out of transition towards the Hawrelak park gate. Hawrelak Park is at the base of the river valley; so all courses require that the athletes climb a hill. Age group athletes will enjoy ascending Emily Murphy Park hill, a short but challenging incline. All courses also cross the mighty North Saskatchewan River, providing spectacular vistas, a breeze from the sparkling glacier-fed waters, and views of Edmonton's majestic skyline. Age group athletes ascend through the winding Groat Ravine, which provides a fast technical downhill before heading back into the park. Elite athletes will ascend Victoria Park Hill, which overlooks the emerald green golf course below. A quick straight descent will send athletes back towards the park and into transition. There are many vantage points for spectators to be close to the athletes so they can feel the speed and energy of the packs. COMPETITION RUN All run courses will be closed to vehicular traffic. Age group athletes will pass through beautiful forested parkland on trails and smooth paved roadways. The runs will finish on the blue carpet in the finish chute. Elite athletes will take a short loop outside the park, allowing spectators the opportunity to see the athletes up close. They will pass through the stadium on each lap in front of cheering fans. PARA All aspects of the Edmonton racecourses are para friendly. Having hosted the 2015 Para World Cup and 2014 Grand Final, the LOC has a great understanding of the special needs of para athletes. TRANSITION The Edmonton LOC has extensive experience offering a transition area with a flow pattern to eliminate crossovers, and providing sufficient signage to make the route clear and easy. Edmonton LOC works closely with the City of Edmonton Parks crew to keep the grass trimmed. Hawrelak Park has ample space for all transition areas. There are no restrictions to the size of the age group transition. The perimeter of the age group transition will be fenced, and therefore spectator friendly. The elite transition is flanked by the grand stands, which provide great viewing for all spectators. FINISH LINE The gantry position and finish chute length and width meet the requirements set out by the ITU for a Grand Final.
