EDMONTON FACTS
1. Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian
province of Alberta. The city is located on
the North Saskatchewan River in the central
region of the province, an area with some of
the most fertile farmland on the prairies.
2. It is the second largest city in Alberta,
and is the hub of Canada's fifth-largest
census metropolitan area. In 2014, the city
had a population of 877,962 and its census
metropolitan area had a population of
1,328,300 - making it the northernmost North
American city with a metropolitan population
of greater than one million.
3. When most of the world is dealing
with an aging population, Edmonton is
becoming younger. The median age of
Edmonton residents is 36 years old with 31%
of Edmontonians between the ages of 25
and 44. With 6 post-secondary institutions
in the city, it is home to 180,000 students
throughout the school year. And to top it all
off, Edmonton also has the youngest Mayor
of all major Canadian cities!
4. The Edmonton region is growing faster
than ever. In just two years, Edmonton has
grown by 7.4% or more than 60,000 people.
That's an average of 82 more people in
Edmonton every day.
5. Edmonton is one of Canada's sunniest
cities, logging nearly 2,300 hours of sunshine
per year. In the month of September, it enjoys
nearly 13 hours of sunlight each day.
6. Edmonton is home to North America's
longest corridor of connected urban parkland,
which runs along our beautiful river valley.
Edmonton's river valley is 22 times larger than
New York City's Central Park.
