TRIATHLON 2016 I COZUMEL 152
AGE GROUP
COMPETITION SOARS IN COZUMEL
Age group racers are the heart and soul of the sport of
triathlon and at the Age Group World Championships in
Cozumel, that proved to be truer than ever. Thousands
of age group athletes pushed themselves in the Mexican
heat in search of World Championship titles. Set near
the picturesque marina in Cozumel, athletes raced
through the crystal-clear waters with views of the ocean
and large cruise ships lining the streets. It was a race
the incredible athletes would never forget.
Over 3000 triathletes from all over the world came
to Mexico to compete in both the standard and sprint
distance races. There were 62 nations represented, with
the host country of Mexico showing the largest team in
attendance with 614 members. Grand Final week always
brings together all types of people from all walks of life
for a time of phenomenal racing. Triathletes ranged from
16-86 years old, from a pair of 80-year old twin brothers
from Australia, to 86-year old Sister Madonna of USA.
At the end of the week's festivities and competitions,
it was the USA who earned an extra amount of
celebrations as they took home the medal count with 53
medals. Mexico followed shortly behind by earning 50,
while Great Britain was in third place with 22 medals.
