MOOLOOLABA MARKS WORLD CUP SEASON OPENER
MOLA AND STIMPSON CLAIM CROWNS
Mooloolaba again played host to the opening event of the
2016 ITU World Cup season.
Spain's Mario Mola was billed as the "benchmark" in the
men's race, and the No.1 ranked athlete on the start
list didn't disappoint with his second major win in a week,
after striking gold in the WTS Abu Dhabi.
In the hot and humid conditions, Mola was pushed by his
compatriot Vicente Hernandez until the final lap. But just
like in Abu Dhabi a week before, Mola proved too strong
and crossed the line first. Behind them, Portugal's Joao
Pereira rectified a disappointing 35th place in Abu Dhabi
for third.
As for the ladies, Jodie Stimpson's perfect start to the
season kept on rolling in Mooloolaba, as the British star
pulled off a confident win in the opening World Cup of the
season. Behind her Australia's Emma Moffatt started
her 2016 season with silver, yet another Mooloolaba
medal to add to her tally. Kirsten Kasper (USA) claimed
her second World Cup podium in third, with a strong all-
round performance.
