TRIATHLON 2016 I WORLD CUP RACES 186
TEN FOR TEN IN TONGYEONG
SPAIN & USA STEAMROLL THROUGH WORLD CUP SEASON
A total of 85 men and 52 women broke the glassy
conditions of the Tongyeong Harbour for a one-lap
swim, followed by three laps on the tricky course that
included a steep climb. On both men's and women's
races, everything was decided on the two laps of 2.5km
each to be run on a mostly flat circuit. It was the 10th
anniversary of the race in Tongyeong, an event that will
be again in the 2017 World Cup calendar.
The penultimate leg of the ITU World Cup season in
Tongyeong was a memorable one. Spain once again
stood on the top spot of the men's podium with Uxío
Abuín Ares claiming his first ITU World Cup victory in
a four-way sprint. In the women's field, Summer Cook
(USA) continued her outstanding 2016 break-through
year, winning the race.
The men's podium was completed with American Matt
Mcelroy, for whom it was his second silver medal this
season, and Vladimir Turbayevskiy (RUS) hanging on
for the bronze. As per the ladies, second went Ai Ueda
(JPN) followed by Renee Tomlin (USA).
