124 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES
Battling heavy rains and cold weather in Rotterdam,
Tamara Gorman pushed through for an unexpected
win after taking a year off triathlon to focus on her
running at the University of Minnesota. Her training
definitely paid off as it was the run where she truly
shone. Making her way from the back of a large leader
pack into second position before over taking Great
Britain's Sophie Coldwell to secure a steady pace and to
take the win by a cool 16 seconds. Melanie Santos (POR)
came from behind to take the silver medal and Coldwell
crossing the line to take the bronze.
The race action didn't end there as the men's competition
was full of high emotions and excitement. It started out
for what looked like an all French white-wash, with Dorian
Coninx and Léo Bergere taking the lead ahead of the
chaser group in the bike leg. Then Raphael Montoya,
another Frenchman, made his way to the front of the
pack with Coninx and emerging Aussie, Luke Willian.
Unfortunately, the Australian took a time penalty on the
third lap of the run which left Montoya and Coninx to fight
it out for gold and silver medals. It came down to a nail-
biting sprint finish, where Montoya pushed hard to cross
the line first, only a mere four seconds in front of Coninx,
with Willian taking bronze.
