132 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES
The 2017 World Cup season got underway with a sun-
soaked return to the circuit for Cape Town that ended in a
one-two for the GB women and a one-two-three for South
Africa's men. Lucy Hall and Jessica Learmonth dominated
the women's race from start to finish before Richard
Murray made light work of his late penalty to power
through to the men's gold.
The British duo had already put some light between
themselves and the rest of the field as they emerged
from the water, and were able to stretch their lead on the
bikes with only Netherlands' Rachel Klamer threatening to
make any inroads over the 20km ride. A determined run
from Ai Ueda saw her catch the Dutch 26-year-old, but
the bronze medallist was still 30 seconds off the pace as
Hall edged the gold ahead of Learmonth at the line.
All three of the men's podium spots went to home
athletes, Richard Murray staying in contention in a big
leading group going on to the bikes before taking the lead
out of T2. It was there that an unfortunate time penalty
was incurred, but a powerful run ensured a relatively
comfortable eight-second win margin over compatriots
Henri Schoeman and Wian Sullwald.
