151 TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES I WORLD TRIATHLON 2017
Huelva made its first ITU World Cup appearance in
September, and it was Germany's Justus Nieschlag and
Czech Republic's Vendula Frintova who took to the new
course in assured fashion, both landing precious first
World Cup wins in what proved a lively debut for the
Spanish coastal town.
The beach glowed in the early morning sun as the women
began two laps of the 750m swimming course, Japan's
Yuko Takahashi playing to her strengths to head up a
ten-strong pack going onto the bikes. Entering Huelva city
for a tight, technical second 20km, Frintova chose her
moment to attack, going on to carve out a 20-second
lead during the run and looking composed as she secured
a comfortable first gold.
Justus Nieschlag, Kevin McDowell (USA) and Alberto
Garcia (ESP) were well placed going into the opening
highway section of the men's bike race, and led the chase
pack by nearly 50 seconds after negotiating the city's hills
and cobbles. First out of T2, Nieschlag refused to cede
any ground on the field, storming home to take the tape
in front of a lively Spanish crowd that erupted as Uxio
Abuin finished third behind McDowell.
