190 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I ITU HALL OF FAME On September 13, at a gala dinner aboard the James Cook ferry in Rotterdam, the six new inductees for 2017 to the ITU Hall of Fame were announced as follows: WOMEN Jackie Fairweather (Gallagher) (AUS) A World Champion Australian triathlete and long-distance runner, Jackie Fairweather began competing in triathlon in 1992, winning the elite Australian National Series in her first season. Four years later, Jackie became the 1996 ITU World Triathlon Champion in Cleveland, Ohio, setting a new championship record time of 1 hour 50 minutes 52 seconds, before going on to win the ITU World Duathlon Championships, becoming the only person ever to win both world titles in the same year. Barb Lindquist (USA) Barbara Lindquist won a gold and three silver medals for the USA swim team in the 1987 & 1991 Pan American Games. Gradually moving into Triathlon, Barb became one of the sport's most consistent performers: of her 134 career races, she won 33, stood on the podium 86 times, and had 114 top 10 finishes. A member of the USA Triathlon Team for the ITU World Championships for 10 straight years, Barb's consistency in racing solidified her as the #1 World ranked ITU triathlete from February 2003 through 2004, a spot held longer than any other male or female in the sport. ITU HALL OF FAME MEN Miles Stewart (AUS) With an impressive background winning national championships in swimming, speed skating, duathlon, aquathlon, triathlon and cycling, Miles Stewart secured a remarkable 4th place in his debut triathlon World Championships in 1989, aged just 18 years old. Two years on, Miles won the illustrious World Championship in his hometown Gold Coast, and remains the youngest triathlete ever to be crowned World Champion. Following that famous victory, the Australian went on to win the World Indoor Championship, a World Cup Championship, 10 ITU World Cups and an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest triathlon time in the world. Rob Barel (Netherlands) Amsterdam native Rob Barel was originally a swimmer, but would become a man of many firsts in the sport of triathlon. After three straight ETU European Championships from 1985-1987, Rob finished 5th in the first ITU World Championships in Avignon, and then went on to come 3rd in the ITU World Championship in 1992. After winning the first ITU Long Distance Championships in 1994 (Nice), he competed for the Netherlands in the first Olympic triathlon at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics at the age of 42, before crowning a brilliant career by coming first in the European Cross Triathlon Championship in 2008.
