191 ITU HALL OF FAME I WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Carl Thomas (USA) As Vice President of Marketing at Speedo Swimwear in 1982, Carl Thomas was a pioneer of the triathlon community. Joining forces with Jim Curl to create the US Triathlon Series, from an original five host cities, the series quickly spread to twelve nationwide, and with the format and distance considered ideal for Olympic competition, Thomas predicted that by the time triathlon became an Olympic sport, "hundreds of thousands of athletes will have competed at the Olympic distance" worldwide. In 1984, Carl Thomas founded CAT Sports Inc., creating network-televised special events for a number of sports and acting as executive producer of over 25 televised triathlon events for ESPN, NBC and other national syndications, and also served as the first Treasurer of the International Triathlon Union. Joop van Zanten (Netherlands) Dutch triathlon pioneer Joop van Zanten has helped the sport reach where it is today. With endless commitment and vision, Joop played a key role in the formation of the Dutch Triathlon Bond in 1987 where he was the first President until 1999, stepping down in order to enjoy more time participating in events.
