66 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES
Spaniard Mario Mola captured a fifth sprint distance
victory of his career at the 2017 ITU World Triathlon
Hamburg, becoming the first man to win twice in the
history of the course. Surviving and then conquering
a mass pack that lasted throughout the race, Mola's
win was truly decided on the run as he eased past the
competition during the five-kilometre course. Victory not
only saw Mola tied for the most sprint-distance victories
in a career (with Jonathan Brownlee), but also pushed
him to the position of most WTS sprint distance podium
finishes in ITU history, with eight.
For the second year in a row, the silver medal went
to Aussie Jacob Birtwhistle who, as he did in 2016,
summoned a last-ditch effort over the final metres to
earn a dramatic second place. Bronze went to Kiwi
Ryan Sissons, who earned a first WTS top-three finish
of his career and ensured Hamburg was the first race
since 2010 that two elite athletes from Oceania found
themselves together on a WTS podium.
