74 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES On a warm, sunny day in Edmonton, 33 women dived in to tackle the 750m swim that was led from the very first strokes by a trio of Spaniard Carolina Routier, USA's Summer Cook and Brazilian Vanessa Lopes. In hot pursuit was an impressive American army: Kirsten Kasper, Katie Zaferes, Taylor Spivey and Tayler Knibb, as well as Bermuda's Flora Duffy, all with sub nine-minute swims. As the bike section got underway, only Kasper, Zaferes and Knibb were able to keep in touch with the powerful Duffy, and the hill at the middle of each lap was where Duffy was able to break away with Knibb, the pair opening up a gap of more than a minute by the bell lap. When the bike looked almost done, Duffy delivered another great push that allowed her to enter the transition alone, 12 seconds ahead of Knibb. A minute- and-a-half behind them, the big chasing group included some of the greatest runners of the circuit. When it came to the 5km run, however, Duffy was able to maintain her rhythm and secure a fourth victory of the season. Behind her, a delighted Knibb managed to cross the finish line in second to earn a first-ever WTS podium, ahead of Katie Zaferes who clocked the day's fastest run time to edge out Summer Cook.
