8 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I INSIDE ITU INSIDE THE ITU The ITU World Triathlon Series was introduced in 2009, creating a series of world championship races rather than a single-day event. Between 2009 and 2011, it was called the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship series, before being rebranded in 2012 as the ITU World Triathlon Series. Eight rounds comprised the 2017 season, culminating with the Grand Final in Rotterdam in September. The world's top triathletes compete head-to-head for the ranking points that determined the overall ITU World Champion, with media and fans able to follow the action from all around the world thanks to our live international broadcast feed available from every event. NEW FOR THE 2017 SEASON The 2017 WTS season began in March in Abu Dhabi, moving on to Australia's Gold Coast in April, Yokohama in May, Leeds in June, Hamburg and Edmonton in July and, in August, Montreal became the 24th city to have hosted a WTS race. Sweden's iconic Stockholm circuit made its return to the calendar, before Rotterdam set the stage for the Grand Final. August saw the first ever edition of the Multisport World Championships Festival held in Penticton, Canada, and the event proved to be a great success, further proof that we are on the right path with moving sport forwards. PRIZE MONEY This year we distributed US$855,000 in prize money – the same for the men and women – in the WTS, plus US$960,000 in the World Cups, a total of US$3.5million for all our athletes. In total across the year we have hosted 8 WTS races plus the Grand Final, 15 World Cups and 9 Paratriathlon events – a busy and successful season. 2017 POINTS SYSTEM There are three levels included in the rankings: 1. ITU Triathlon World Cup events, 2. ITU World Triathlon Series events and the 3. ITU World Triathlon Grand Final. The final ranking is obtained by adding the five top scores from the World Triathlon Series and ITU Triathlon World Cup events, plus the points gained at the Grand Final. Scoring for a season begins immediately after the Grand Final and ends with the following year's Grand Final. Athletes can only score points from a maximum of five events on the same continent, excluding the Grand Final. Points are awarded to the top 50 athletes at the Grand Final; top 40 for World Championship Series events and top 30 for ITU Triathlon World Cup events.
