139 TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES I WORLD TRIATHLON 2017
For the second year, the Chinese town of Chengdu, home
of the panda bears, hosted a World Cup in the fast and
furious format of semi-finals and final. In the elimination
rounds, athletes completed the sprint-distance course of
750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and 5-kilometre run,
with the top 30 per gender qualifying for the final. The
Finals then consisted of a super sprint-distance format:
400-metre swim, 10-kilometre bike and 2.5-kilometre
run, to crown the eventual winners.
Australia's Matthew Hauser got his World Cup career
off to a flying start, earning gold in his debut race. The
silver medal went to Rostislav Pevtsov (AZE) for the third
year in a row in Chengdu, before Luke Willian collected
bronze, his second WC medal of the year. In the women's
race, Non Stanford, a former ITU World Triathlon Series
World Champion, had never won a World Cup race before
Chengdu, but the Brit set the record straight as she
emerged with gold from the two days of racing.
Joining Stanford on her first World Cup podium was
Germany's Laura Lindemann with the silver and Kirsten
Kasper (USA) with her first medal of the year in third.
