148 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES
The city of Carlsbad and the spa resort of Karlovy Vary,
in the Czech Republic, became the site for a World Cup
for the first time, with plenty of challenging courses in the
stunning town. The region welcomed athletes and crowds
for the 1500m swim in the Rolava lake, followed by a
40km ride along the streets of Karlovy Vary and four laps
of 2.5km each to finish the race.
It was also to be a first for Gustav Iden (NOR) as he
took a debut gold with an impressive performance, with
Tayler Reid (NZL) on the podium for the first time in a
World Cup finishing third. Completing the podium was the
veteran Italian Alessandro Fabian, who returned to racing
for the first time since Rio 2016.
In the women's race, Australian Gillian Backhouse won
after dominating the race, showcasing a magnificent
swim, a strong bike and a consistent run in the hills and
cobbled streets of the Czech Republic town. Cheered
on by the local crowds, local triathlete Vendula Frintova
crossed the finish line in second, while American Summer
Cook finished third.
