160 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES
Ending the 2017 World Cup season with a bang in Japan,
USA's Summer Cook and Marten Van Riel of Belgium
were crowned deserving winners of the 2017 Miyazaki
ITU Triathlon World Cup. WBoth wins were milestones
for the athletes; Cook earned her second straight gold
after winning in Tongyeong a week before and also earned
the Miyazaki title for the very first time. For Van Riel, gold
represented a first-ever World Cup win of his career.
Joining Cook on the women's podium was USA compatriot
Taylor Spivey, who claimed silver, and Emma Jackson
(AUS) with the bronze.
In the men's race, it was Spaniard Vicente Hernandez
who crossed the line in second place with Andreas
Schilling (DEN) finishing in third, both reaching the podium
for the first time this year.
The standard-distance race was held in Miyazaki for only
the second time in ITU history, and for the second year
running it was a fitting finale to a fine year, the 2017
season laid to rest after an exciting 15-stop global tour
that had begun back in February.
