166 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I MULTISPORT FESTIVAL
The 2017 ITU Duathlon World Championships was the
first event held in the inaugural Multisport World Festival
in Penticton. Kicking off the week-long Multisport racing
event, the Duathlon crowned the first set of world titles
with Australia's Felicity Sheedy-Ryan taking the women's
gold and France's Benoit Nicolas claiming the men's. The
wins brought the two elite racers back to the top of the
Duathlon World Championship podium after Sheedy-Ryan
had previously earned the title in 2012 and Nicolas in
2014.
Sheedy-Ryan's gold was earned on the bike after she had
created a large enough lead to tackle the final run leg
unchallenged. Joining her on the women's podium was
Spaniard Margarita Garcia Carcia Cañellas who earned
the silver and Emma Pallant (GBR) who claimed bronze.
In the men's race, Nicolas earned gold on the bell
lap when he broke away from a tight race with Emilio
Martin (ESP) who came home second. Bronze fore Mark
Buckingham of Great Britain completed the
men's podium.
