168 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I MULTISPORT FESTIVAL
After battling their way across one of the most beautiful
and scenically diverse courses that the sport has seen,
Mexico's Francisco Serrano and Canada's Melanie
McQuaid were crowned the 2017 Penticton ITU Cross
Triathlon World Champions.
Serrano earned his very first World title in the men's field
after an inspired comeback performance on the run drove
him past the race-day leader and onto the blue carpet to
grab the finishing tape.
Joining him on the podium was Spaniard Ruben Rufaza
who finished with the silver, while bronze went to Kiwi Kyle
Smith, who claimed both the elites third place medal and
the U23 World Championship as the first athlete to finish.
The win from Melanie McQuaid saw her reclaiming a
crown that she first won back in 2011. Six years on she
brought out another spirited showing, this time on home
turf, to earn a superb win. Coming through in second
was Great Britain's Jacqueline Slack and bronze went to
Ladina Buss (SUI).
