170 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I MULTISPORT FESTIVAL
With the home-crowd cheers pushing him onward,
Canada's own Lionel Sanders crossed the line to become
the 2017 Penticton ITU Long Distance Triathlon World
Champion. Overcoming a large deficit from the swim and
a flat tyre on the bike, Sanders had to come from behind
to collect the first world title of his career.
Taking the silver medal was Joshua Amberger (AUS), who
held the race lead for the majority of the competition, and
bronze went to another Australian, Joe Gambles.
In the women's race, executing a phenomenal run
performance in the first ITU long distance event of her
career, Australia's Sarah Crowley was crowned champion.
After closing the deficit from the swim and chasing a race
leader for the entirety of the bike, Crowley eventually took
the lead on the second lap of the run to excitedly grab the
finishing tape and seize a memorable first world title.
Coming through in second was Helle Frederiksen (DEN)
who dominated the first two legs of the race before
Crowley seized the initiative on the run. Taking the final
spot on the podium was Canadian Heather Wurtele,
who battled hard for her position after a disappointing
performance in the water.
