174 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I MULTISPORT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2017 Powerman Zofingen Long Distance Duathlon
World Championships celebrated its 29th birthday with
a race full of drama and emotion. The field brought
together a mixture of top triathletes, duathletes and men
and women from other endurance sports to take up the
unique long-distance challenge.
It was Britain's Emma Pooley and Russian Maxim
Kuzmin who claimed wthe titles at the culmination of a
spectacular event, Pooley setting an outstanding new
record with a fourth straight World Champion title. The
British star started the first leg of the run determined
to show that she was again the one to beat, closely
followed by France's Sabrina Montmartreau, and was able
to maintain the pace all the way to the gold. Van Reijen
(NED) improved on last year's fifth place to take silver,
before Katrin Esefeld (GER) to cross the line for bronze.
In the men's race, Maxim Kuzmin stunned the spectators
with an incredible win to claim his first victory at the
distance. The Russian first competed in Duathlon last
year where he placed 5th, but this time out he was able
to romp home a full 85 seconds ahead of last year's
winner Seppe Odeyn (BEL), with third place, as it did last
year, going to the Dutch athlete Soren Bystrup.
