BroWnLee Win sets up Grand FinaL thriLLer
Alistair Brownlee knew that only a win would do in
Stockholm if he was to contend for a world title in
2013 but the London Olympic champion delivered,
with a solo bike breakaway paying off in Sweden.
Stockholm marked the second consecutive race
where the sports modern-day heavyweights had met
and early on it appeared that another Brownlee,
Brownlee, Gomez podium was on the cards. But the
race took an unexpected turn when Alistair powered
off the front of the pack on the final bike lap, in what
turned out to be a counter for his lack of run form.
He managed to steal 20 seconds on that lap, which
was enough to hold off the chasers and seal his 15th
career victory.
"I just did all I could to win really, I knew my running
wasn't quite where I wanted it to be so I had to do a bit
of something on the bike," Alistair said after the race.
Behind Alistair, Gomez showed that Jonathan Brown-
lee hadn't taken his measure yet, ousting the younger
Brownlee to record silver and set up another nailbi-
ting showdown in the race for the 2013 World Cham-
pionship.
