In a day of twists, it took a final finishing chute master- class from Javier Gomez to claim his third ITU World Championship title as Jonathan Brownlee had to settle for silver. The race had been adhering to the triathlon legends playbook until the second transition in Hyde Park, when Alistair Brownlee grimaced on dismount. His Achilles pro- blem was back. With Alistair literally out of the running, the race then entered déjà vu territory, as Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee entered an epic cat and mouse game across the 10km. Just like in Auckland 12 months before, Gomez unleashed a perfectly timed sprint to take home the race win, but this time also the 2013 world title. It was a red-letter day for Spain, with Mario Mola clinching the race and overall series bronze thanks to a tenacious run in Hyde Park. While it wasn't Alistair Brownlee's race, he refused to give up and finished in 52 nd place.
