In the women's it was plucky German Anne Haug whose run of form continued, adding the 2013 season opener to her 2012 Grand Final Auckland victory and season-opening World Cup win in Mooloolaba. Haug was 45 seconds down leaving the water in New Zealand, but again her tenacious ability on the bike came to the fore and she caught the leaders within two laps. In a large group of leaving T2, Haug put the hammer down with two kilometres to go and didn't look back. It was an early show of power in what would end up being one of the closest elite women's WTS series in history, and Haug again pro- ved why Auckland's technical and hilly course is one of her favourites. The Netherland's Maaike Caelers and Australia's Felicity Abram collected the remaining two places on the podium. It was Abram's first major ITU podium since 2008, while the rising Dutch star added a second WTS silver medal to her career tally.
