The small island southwest of Japan's mainland has
been on the World Cup circuit since 1996, the lon-
gest event in ITU history. But 2013 went down as
one of the best for the passionate Ishigaki fans,
with Japan's Ai Ueda leading an all-Japanese sweep
in the women's event. The Olympian blasted
through the three-lap run course to claim her first
World Cup title since 2010, followed by rising star
Yuka Sato and Juri Ide. "This is my eighth time chal-
lenging the triathlon here and being able to win this
time, I think I might have been able to give a lot of
people courage and inspiration," Ueda said. A race-
defining bike breakaway led Australia's Ryan Fisher
to his first World Cup victory in the men's event. In
wet and windy conditions, Fisher broke away early
on in the 40km bike with countryman Dan Wilson
and Ireland's Bryan Keane and the three went to
work. While Keane crashed and lost touch with the
two Australians in the bike, he pulled out an impres-
sive run to overtake Wilson for silver, but no-one
could touch Fisher who stormed home to win by
more than a minute in Japan.
