It was a case of déjà vu in the women's 2013 Long
Distance Duathlon World Championships race with
reigning champion Eva Nystrom again unleashing her
powerful leg in the bike in Zofingen, increasing her
gap to the chase at every timing point to slingshot
herself into a 10 minute lead heading on the final run
leg. She increased it further across those 30km, to
eventually win by a margin of 13 minutes. In the
battle for the placings, Germany's Julia Viellehner
soared ahead on the first 15km for silver Ruth Bren-
nan-Morrey (USA) and Barbara Schwarz (SUI) endu-
red a sprint duel for bronze, but it was the American
who took the final podium spot.
In the men's race, Belgium's Rob Woestenborghs
carried his duathlon form over into the long-distance
version to collect his second world title in 2013.
Woestenborghs collected the standard distance
duathlon title in Colombia and in Zofingen he again
played his hand perfectly. While riding out the first
half of the 150km bike in a small and powerful chase,
he broke away in the second half and steadily built a
seven minute buffer ahead of the final run leg. Behind
him Switzerland's Andre Moser collected silver and
Germany's Michael Wetzel bronze. Woestenborghs
continued Belgian men's legacy in the event, which
has been dominated by Joerie Vansteelant and his
late brother Benny.
