JorGensen maKes history at home in san dieGo
Gwen Jorgensen had shown she was a serious
contender in previous seasons, but mark down
San Diego 2013 as the race she moved from one
to watch to one to beat.
Jorgensen started the run a minute behind
Australia's Emma Moffatt and the USA's Sarah Groff
at the birthplace of triathlon, but reeled them both
in thanks to an incredible 33:10 run split. To the
crowd's delight, Jorgensen effortlessly overtook
Moffatt with just kilometre to go to claim her first
ITU World Triathlon Series title on home soil. It was
also the first WTS win by an American woman.
"This feels amazing to be on home soil, a national
championship and to be the first woman from the
USA to win one of these is an amazing feeling,"
Jorgensen said.
Great Britain's Non Stanford also emerged as a seri-
ous contender in 2013 as she just edged a cram-
ping Moffatt in final few metres for silver. It was the
2012 Under23 World Champion's first WTS podium.
Moffatt held on to third just ahead of a fast-finishing
Anne Haug who retained the overall series lead.
