Since the series inception in 2009, only Alistair and Jonathan have claimed wins in the Spanish capital. But 2013 saw one of the most powerful Brownlee performances, as Jonathan continued his comeback in impressive form. Brownlee was part of the lead pack in the swim and controlled the tempo of a small but powerful breakaway that used the tough hill in Casa de Campo park to their advantage. That group of Brownlee, Javier Gomez, Alessando Fabian, Aaron Royle and Richard Varga had a 90 second lead on the field starting the run, which meant just like Yoko- hama, a battle was brewing between Brownlee and Gomez. But it seemed like 2013 might be a turning point in the rivalry, as Brownlee showed he had Gomez' mea- sure again, rocketing off the to win by an incredible 50 seconds. Gomez claimed yet another Madrid podium place with silver and took the lead in the ove- rall rankings, while Ivan Vasiliev nabbed his first WTS medal with bronze on the back of an impressive run.
