Alistair Brownlee said afterwards that if any course
was going to be his course, this dynamic new Kitzbü-
hel race was it. Yet no-one quite expected just how
Brownlee would make the world's toughest triathlon
look almost like a walk in the park as he collected his
14th World Triathlon Series win in Austria.
After a swim where he left the water in eighth place,
Brownlee quickly caught the leaders and then decided
to make his move. He shook off the persistent Javier
Gomez and proceeded to time-trial solo up the Horn,
managing to put one kilometre between him and his
nearest competitors at the final bike time-check. Des-
pite that incredible bike leg surely testing his legs,
taking his time down the finishing chute to high-five
fans and admitting he was suffering from stomach
pains, Brownlee still recorded the fifth fastest run
split of the day. In a career of highlights, this was one
of the best.
The battle behind Brownlee drilled down to three,
Sven Riederer, Mario Mola and South Africa's Henri
Schoeman, but it was Riederer who left T2 with a lead
and carried that into yet another WTS podium place.
Mola's impressive season continued with bronze,
while Schoeman showed he's one to watch in fourth.
