Le corre maKes sure this time
France's Pierre Le Corre just slipped off the podium
in a four-way sprint for the U23 men's title in Auck-
land in 2012, but he made sure history didn't repeat
in London. Le Corre was in a lead group of five for
most of the 10km run before he, Spain's Fernando
Alarza and Australia's Declan Wilson made their
move at the start of the bell lap. They went toe to
toe for most of that final three kilometres, before
the Frenchman put the burners down on the
finishing chute to claim the 2013 Under23 Men's
World Championship.
Alarza outstayed Wilson for silver, his second con-
secutive U23 Men's World Championship silver
medal, but considered it a bright finish to a year
punctuated with injury. Wilson's bronze medal came
in just his third Olympic distance race, marking him
as a man to watch in 2014.
In the Under23 women's race the title came down
to yet another nail biting finish and it was Australia's
Charlotte McShane who produced the performance
of the day. The pint-sized star proved the strongest
in the final kilometre to claim her first ITU World
Championship title, ahead of Canada's Ellen Pennock
and Amelie Kretz, and was glad to have finally found
her training form when it mattered most.
