BucKinGham and hursey maKe an impact
A well-timed bike breakaway helped Great Britain's
Mark Buckingham secure his first World Cup title in
a new course on the circuit, Palamos. Although
blistering heat and the high sun added challenges
to the already tough challenge in Spain, Bucking-
ham was seemingly unfazed en route to beating
Russia's Dmitry Polyanskiy and Ukraine's Yegor
Martynenko who finished second and third respec-
tively. The USA's Katie Hursey showed she is one to
watch with an impressive win in the women's event,
just the second ITU World Cup she has contested.
Hursey came through USAT's Collegiate Recruit-
ment Program, where Gwen Jorgensen was also
discovered, and made her ITU debut in early 2013.
In Spain she was part of a five-woman breakaway in
the bike and used her running background to pull
away from the pack early on in the 10km run. Italy's
Annamaria Mazzetti and Australia's Tamsyn Moana-
Veale ran themselves into silver and bronze, both
making up a sizeable gap off the bike to claim those
podium spots.
