It was always going to be one of the most intriguing
races of the season, with a 750m swim followed by
an 11.5km ride and a 2.5km run straight up the slo-
pes of the imposing Kitzbühel horn, with more than
one kilometre of vertical climb. In the women's race,
it proved the perfect place for Great Britain's Jodie
Stimpson to put her name on the rarefied list of
World Triathlon Series winners.
On a course where strong cyclists revelled, it was no
surprise that Stimpson was part of a four-woman
breakaway alongside the tenacious Anne Haug, New
Zealand's Nicky Samuels and Australia's Emma Jack-
son. But what was unexpected was her perfectly
timed push and strength as the course reached its
steepest point. In the final kilometre, where the gra-
dient reached a maximum of 17 and 22%, Stimpson
increased her lead to over 40 seconds. That proved
enough to take into the short but steep 2.5km run,
to collect her first WTS win in emphatic style.
Behind her best series result since 2011 to claim sil-
ver while Haug's bronze medal had a golden lining to
it, it was just enough to push her back into the over-
all series lead.
