ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY
The Edmonton LOC is committed to minimizing environmental impact; constantly assessing
the potential for waste recovery and emissions reduction. The 2019 ITU World Triathlon Grand
Final will be no different.
Commitment to environment and sustainability are among the criteria used when selecting
external service providers and stakeholders. Preference is given to those who incorporate
sustainable criteria into food purchasing, preparation, waste disposal and related equipment
and supplies.
The Edmonton LOC aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through continued action on
energy efficiency, conservation, and through implementation of renewable and alternative
energy wherever possible. The providing of shuttles in and out of the venue reduces single
occupant vehicle emissions.
A focus on sufficient placement and quantity of waste, recycling, and composting units
throughout the venue is necessary to ensure all waste is properly collected and disposed.
Refillable water bottles and water refilling stations will be provided to race teams and
spectators, minimizing the use of single-use plastic water bottles.
The development of outreach and engagement programs over social media, promoting
reduced energy and proper waste disposal will increase local awareness and provide
education to the community on sustainability.
Volunteers are a valuable resource in ensuring waste is properly collected and disposed.
In Alberta deposits are collected on purchases of plastic beverage containers, creating an
opportunity for charities or non-profits to volunteer their services at events in return for
donations in the form of plastic recycling that can then be returned for deposits.
The Edmonton LOC is constantly re-evaluating its environment and sustainability plan
based on ever-improving sustainability research, newly developed methods of practice and
constantly shifting event demands.
