Specifically, the legacy of the 2019 WTS Grand Final would begin with a support program
for Triathlon Canada's 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic programs. The surety for this
plan is provided by the City of Edmonton's commitment to fund the current five-year
program of WTS events in Edmonton with $1.2m a year. A portion of the legacy from the
2017 and 2018 events will be specifically and wholly dedicated to the Triathlon Canada
teams for 2019 and 2020.
The 2019 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final budget contains a legacy line item with a
minimum of $800,000. There is a potential for this legacy plan to be enhanced by the
application of an un-used contingency or surplus to generate in excess of $1.5m for the
2021-2024 quadrennial.
Should the Edmonton 2019 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final bid be successful, a detailed
Legacy Plan will be developed by the Edmonton LOC in collaboration with Triathlon Canada
and Sport Canada. The plan will address the strategic objectives of Triathlon Canada to
ensure support for Olympic and Paralympic athlete development and performance.
