1. RISK ASSESSMENT
The Edmonton LOC has been host to many high-level triathlon events. With this extensive
history the staff have encountered many adverse conditions and situations, which have allowed
them the foresight to reduce the impact of risks.
Swim The water quality team has been working with the LOC for close to 20 years. They have
been collecting data on chlorination levels, and creating best practices for water quality for
our events. Of particular concern to the ITU is the measurement of levels of Cyanobacteria. In
2015, Edmonton experienced its first presence of cyanobacteria. The City and Alberta Health
were quick to respond to the problem, and within a day the water was back to acceptable
levels. In response to this, the water quality team has created a more comprehensive testing
program in order to detect Cyanobacteria at its earliest presence. If Edmonton experiences
this problem again, the LOC and COE have already created a solution. The Swim venue had
a complete overhaul for our hosting of the Grand Final in 2014. The condition of the swim
course is excellent. The water quality experts anticipate that the lake will not require any further
reconditioning for the 2019 Grand Final.
Bike During preparations for the 2014 Grand Final, the City worked extremely hard to prepare
and resurface the roads used for our Bike courses. Athletes were impressed with quality of the
road surfaces. Many of the same roads will be used for 2019 Grand Final. The LOC continues to
work with the City to maintain this excellent quality.
Run As with the bike courses, the City committed to good surfaces for the run courses. The
Hawrelak park road was completely resurfaced for 2014, and will be monitored and repaired
ongoing until 2019.
Volunteers Edmonton LOC has a core of very knowledgeable and committed volunteers.
Weather The LOC has experienced every kind of weather - cold, hail, heat, and rain. Being a
northern community, the Edmonton team always has cold at top of mind when preparing for
ITU events. Members are constantly thinking of ways to make our athletes comfortable in the
varied conditions. The LOC works closely with suppliers to be able to change quickly to provide
heating or cooling as the weather is forecasted.
