APPENDICES // 70
Race marshals will communicate with medical personnel via the Command Center to inform
them of athletes requiring attention. Medical personnel will have grid maps to allow rapid
responses to a downed athlete's location.
Specific to the swim portion of the race, the Water Safety Manager and Water Safety team
will be responsible for getting any athletes who need assistance to shore, at which point the
medical team may assume care. Drowned athletes will be taken to pre-determined extraction
points along the shore of the lake.
The medical communications coordinator will be present in the Command Center at all times
to ensure efficient and timely coordination between medical and non-medical race personnel.
Finish Line Area
Access to the medical tent shall be unobstructed from the finish line to ensure rapid evacuation
of athletes requiring assistance. Access to the medical tent will be restricted to medical
personnel only, for both athlete safety and privacy.
Recovery Zone
Adjacent to the finish line and the medical tent there will be an unrestricted recovery zone for
winded athletes who require shade, water, and snacks. Edmonton has widely varying weather
conditions and depending on the conditions of the day, this area may contain chairs for resting,
water, shade, misting tent and/or shelter from the wind.
Medical Records
The athletes' medical history (medications, allergies, medical conditions, etc.) will be collected
during registration and provided to the race team in hard copy. Athletes will have their critical
medical info on the back of their race bibs. Information for elite athletes not wearing bibs will
be retrieved via radio from the master list in the medical tent should they require treatment.
Athletes with significant or severe medical problems or drug allergies are encouraged to use
Medic-Alert or similar bracelets.
All treatments will be recorded on paper charts, and the Medical Coordinator will maintain
these records in confidence for a period of 10 years.
