140 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES
It was a day of firsts in the Spanish capital for the 2017
ITU Madrid World Cup, with both Ryan Sissons (NZL)
and Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR) winning their first ever
World Cups.
Also first on the podium were Taylor Spivey (USA) and
Chelsea Burns (USA) in the women's race and Raphael
Montoya (FRA) and compatriot Simon Viain in the men's.
World Cup racing returned to the Spanish capital after
an eight-year hiatus, and the athletes enjoyed one of the
toughest courses of the 2017 World Cup season. The
elites swum in the lake at the Casa de Campo before
mounting their bikes for five kilometres in the same park
and then heading into the city centre for six laps of a
highly demanding, technical and tough circuit, including
the terrific Cuesta de la Vega, a demanding slope with an
8% gradient. With the second transition and finish line
situated on the beautiful Plaza de Oriente, right in front of
the Royal Palace, it was the perfect set up for one of the
most thrilling races of the season.
