135 TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES I WORLD TRIATHLON 2017
Australia's Emma Jackson found herself back on top of
a World Cup podium for the first time in four years in
Mooloolaba after a strong all-round performance
delivered victory on home turf, with compatriot Luke
Willian finishing strongest to win the men's race.
It was hot and humid on the Sunshine Coast as Jackson
worked hard in the front group of six on the bikes to
establish a gap over the chase led by compatriot Ashleigh
Gentle. Another Australian, Emma Jeffcoat, then led into
the run, but just before the 5km mark it was Jackson who
accelerated to assume the lead from where she could not
be caught, Gentle earning silver, Mexico's Claudia Rivas
the bronze.
The wind whipped up for the men as Tommy Zaferes,
Kevin McDowell, Michael Lori and Sam Ward negotiated
T1 in the lead, working well together on the bikes to
extend the gap to more than 90 seconds over the chase.
With one lap to go on the run, Lori dropped off the
leaders and it was Willian who took the initiative on
the hill, striding away for his first World Cup win.
Drew Box finished second and New Zealand's Sam
Ward collected bronze.
