136 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES
South Africa's Richard Murray made it back-to-back wins
back in early April with another commanding victory in
New Plymouth, a third consecutive gold here for the
28-year-old, while Katie Zaferes became the fourth
American in succession to win the title.
It was Murray's compatriot Henri Schoeman and New
Zealand's Trent Thorpe first out of the water and well-
placed as part of the 23-man lead group going into the
run. Murray then shook off the rain to post the quickest
run over the 5km run course and once again cross the
New Plymouth finish line in first place, American Matthew
McElroy fighting back into second, closely pursued by New
Zealand's Ryan Sissons.
Katie Zaferes also made light work of the conditions,
leading into the technical bike section with Nicole Van
Der Kaay (NZL) and Yuko Takahashi (JPN) all looking
comfortable despite the drizzle. Ten seconds separated
the top 20 athletes through T2 with Takahashi out front
going into the three-lap run, but as a front group of eight
emerged, it was Zaferes who came through in a thrilling
race for the line, Joanna Brown (CAN) one second behind
and Claire Michel (BEL) in third.
