144 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES
A mix of old faces and newcomers filled the podium at
the 2017 ITU Tiszaujvaros World Cup, with American
Reneeìe Tomlin claiming her second consecutive win in
the iconic Hungarian town before local athlete Bence
Bicsak secured himself a first ever World Cup podium.
The seventh stop on this season's circuit captivated
the thousands of spectators enjoying a whole week of
triathlon that culminated with the 21st edition of the
semi-finals and finals format.
30 women dived off the Tiszy pontoon for a 750m swim
on the lake cheered by thousands of spectators, and it
was the American Tomlin who controlled the race from
the beginning. The surprise package proved to be the
young Frenchwoman Leonie Periault, sprinting against the
veteran American to finish second and earn her first ever
World Cup podium at the age of just 23. For Netherlands'
Maikee Caelers, the bronze medal was her second ITU
podium of the week, after grabbing bronze at the Mixed
Relays World Championships in Hamburg.
After a risk of lightening affected the start of the men's
race, the local spectators were soon cheering on Bence
Bicsak who maintained his place at the head of the field
and earn a first ever World Cup podium finish. Second
was Russian Dmitry Polyanskiy courtesy of an explosive
sprint finish just ahead of compatriot Ilya Prasolov who
also enjoyed his first taste of life on the podium.
