155 TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES I WORLD TRIATHLON 2017
With the USA hosting its first World Cup event since
2010, it was the city of Sarasota that became the 12th
stop of the 2017 season. Due to high temperatures, the
races were changed to a duathlon format consisting of a
2.5km run, 20km bike and 5km run.
It was to be Mexico's Rodrigo Gonzalez who masterfully
conquered the course in the men's race. Despite having
to serve a penalty, Gonzalez still managed to come out
on top and secure his second World Cup win and third
podium finish of the 2017 season. Taking the silver medal
was Marten Van Riel (BEL) who narrowly outran the USA's
own Kevin McDowell in the final moments of the race to
come second.
On the women's side, it was Japan's Juri Ide who came
to terms with the hot conditions to claim her first gold
medal of the season. Behind her in second was home
crowd favourite Chelsea Sodaro (USA), who secured a
first World Cup podium of her young career and bring
some sparkle to her debut season at elite level. Taking the
bronze medal was Julia Hauser (AUT), also reaching the
podium for the first time.
