156 WORLD TRIATHLON 2017 I TRIATHLON WORLD CUP RACES Cool conditions at Tongyeong harbour welcomed the athletes back to this classic World Cup sprint circuit, and it was USA's Summer Cook who once again produced a decisive late surge to win the women's gold, before France's Aurelien Raphael put in an assured finale to secure his first World Cup title. Cook had led for most of the 750-metre swim, fronting a lead pack that included compatriot Taylor Spivey, Hungary's Zsanett Bragmayer and Korea's Yun-Jung Jang, but Ai Ueda (JPN) then assumed control in an 18-strong lead group of cyclists. After easing her way back into contention, Cook and Ueda settled into a familiar rhythm on the run, before the American's longer stride stretched out a brilliant six-second win. A decisive, gritty run from France's Aurelien Raphael then saw him successfully hold off a late surge from Azerbaijan's Rostislav Pevtsov. Having sat patiently in the thick of a huge pack for much of the race, the duo pulled clear to produce a memorable finale. The race had looked wide open as Austrian top-seed Andreas Schilling, Belgian Van Riel and Germany's Schwetz shared point on the bikes, but Raphael and Pevtsov broke away, the Azeri just running out of track as Raphael took the tape.
